Description

Sugar gliders are small, short-headed flying possums and are rarely found in private pets in Germany. However, these cute and social animals are often seen in zoos and animal parks around the world. NEKTON-Sugar Glider is a special supplementary feed rich in vitamins and minerals that is finely tailored to the needs of these animals.

It is important to ensure a balanced diet. This can be difficult because flying marsupials can be very picky eaters. They tend to develop favorite foods, which can vary from day to day, making it difficult to maintain a balanced diet.

For this reason, NEKTON has developed a supplementary feed with high acceptance for these animals.

Further information

The flying marsupial (Petaurus breviceps) is a small arboreal marsupial native to Indonesia, New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia. In the wild, the flying marsupial lives in forested areas covered mainly with eucalyptus and gum trees. An adult flying marsupial is the size of a southern flying squirrel (about 10 cm from the nose to the base of the tail) and has a gliding membrane from its front paws to its ankles, which enables it to glide down trees. An imported adult is generally brownish in color. This probably comes from its diet and the color of the trees in which it lives. Its furry tail cannot be used for grasping, but it can be used for balancing or as a rudder during flight.

There are many things to consider before choosing a flying marsupial as a pet. Flying marsupials are nocturnal animals and can be very picky eaters. In captivity, they can live up to 15 years. In general, flying marsupials are very social animals. With the right attention and care, they will give you many hours of enjoyment.

The cage should be as large and high as possible because flying marsupials like to climb. You can use freshly cut branches from non-poisonous trees and shrubs (e.g. willow, aspen or apple). As soon as the branches have dried out, replace them with fresh branches. Flying marsupials love to use various parrot toys such as ladders, ropes and rings to keep them occupied and to give them exercise.

A small platform for resting, a nesting box and a sleeping bag are essential parts of the cage. These should be placed in the upper third of the cage because flying marsupials love to rest in the higher areas. Spread small animal litter or small amounts of non-toxic leaves and grass without chemical additives on the floor of the cage to give the flying marsupial the opportunity to build its nest. A room temperature between 23 and 29 degrees is recommended, and the humidity can be within the normal household range.

Choose a quiet location for the cage so that the sleepyhead is not disturbed by household noises and people walking by during the day. In the wild, flying gliders feed on nectar, pollen, fruits and juice, as well as buds, berries and small insects. The high sugar content is due to the animal’s fast metabolism, which is why they are called “sugar gliders”.

When kept as pets, the flying marsupial’s diet must consist of at least 15 to 25 percent animal protein and 75 percent plant matter. A typical fresh diet includes a mix of different fruits and vegetables. Avoid citrus fruits and never feed too much of one fruit. A small amount of hard-boiled egg yolk, premium wet cat food and a few sunflower seeds and soft seeds round out the menu. Flying marsupials love nuts, but only feed them in moderation, e.g. one nut per day, otherwise your pet could become too fat.

Feed the food in the late afternoon or early evening when the flying marsupial likes to eat. This also reduces the appearance of fruit flies. Remove any uneaten fruit in the morning. Feeding only dry food is not recommended. Dry food is a practical short-term alternative if fresh food cannot be given.

Two meals a day are ideal, so the digestive process can be split up. Give a smaller meal in the morning and the main meal in the early evening.

It is important to ensure a balanced diet. This can be difficult as flying marsupials can be very picky eaters. They tend to develop favorite foods, which may vary from day to day and everything else is ignored. All your efforts to provide your flying marsupial with a balanced diet may be in vain and your choice of vital supplements may become a guessing game.

That’s why NEKTON has developed a supplementary food for sugar gliders. Give NEKTON Sugar Glider two to three times a week as an alternative to the usual food.

Giving NEKTON Sugar Glider ensures that your flying marsupial is supplied with all the essential vitamins and minerals. NEKTON Sugar Glider also ensures that all the necessary proteins and carbohydrates are provided.

NEKTON Sugar Glider is the perfect product to keep healthy and happy sugar gliders.
